B onus Q&A with David Haws: Unveiling the Shadows of Shadow Sport Trilogy
Q1: How did the idea for Shadow Sport first come to you, and what inspired you to delve into the world of young adult supernatural thrillers?
David Haws: The idea for Shadow Sport had been simmering in the back of my mind for quite some time. I couldn't escape its grip, so I decided to put pen to paper, or rather fingers to keyboard, and let the story unfold. As for young adult supernatural thrillers, I've always been captivated by the genre. The blend of mystery, action, and paranormal intrigue offers a canvas to explore profound themes and challenges unique to that age group. When I wrote the book there were a lot of young adult books about mysterious vampires that turn out to be romantic interests. To me it seemed that when someone is cagey, moody, and mysterious it shouldn’t always turn out the way the heroine hopes.
Q2: The trilogy takes readers on a rollercoaster of suspense, supernatural beings, and unexpected twists. How do you approach building tension and keeping readers on the edge of their seats?
David Haws: Tension is the heartbeat of any thrilling story. I aim to keep readers guessing, introduce unexpected elements, and slowly unravel mysteries. I love playing with expectations and surprising both my characters and the readers. It's about creating an immersive experience where every page holds the promise of something new and gripping.
Q3: Which character was the most challenging to write, and who became your personal favorite?
David Haws: Each character presented its own set of challenges, but I must say, Cole stole the show for me. Writing his sinister nature and delving into his psyche was both fascinating and chilling, in a fun sort of way. As for my personal favorite, I can't play favorites with my characters. Each one contributes uniquely to the story. But sometimes it’s exciting to cut loose and write about a really disturbing bad guy.
Q4: Can you share any behind-the-scenes insights into the naming process, particularly the evolution from "Blood Promise" to "Shadow Promise" for the second book?
David Haws: Naming books can be as challenging as naming characters. "Blood Promise" initially seemed fitting, but as the narrative unfolded, "Shadow Promise" resonated more with the themes of the story. It captures the essence of the supernatural elements and the looming shadows that Vespa must navigate.
Q5: Shadow of Death marks the conclusion of the trilogy. Without giving away spoilers, what can readers expect in this climactic finale, and how did you approach tying up the series' intricate threads?
David Haws: Shadow of Death is the culmination of Vespa's journey, and readers can expect heightened stakes, heart-wrenching decisions, and a final showdown between good and evil. Tying up the series was both challenging and exhilarating. I wanted to deliver a satisfying conclusion while leaving room for lingering mysteries.
Q6: Your trilogy weaves supernatural elements with suspense and action. How do you balance these genres, and do you have a favorite scene or moment from the series?
David Haws: Balancing genres is about finding the common threads that tie them together. I enjoy the challenge of blending supernatural elements with suspense and action—it creates a rich tapestry. As for a favorite scene, it's hard to pick, but Vespa's first encounter with the supernatural realm in Shadow Sport holds a special place for me. It sets the tone for the entire series.
Q7: Moving beyond the supernatural, you've explored various genres in your writing. How does your love for adventure, supernatural, and diverse genres influence your storytelling?
David Haws: I believe in fiction without limits. Every genre offers a unique lens through which to explore different facets of the human experience. My love for adventure and diverse genres allows me to experiment with storytelling, keeping it fresh and exciting for both me and the readers.
Q8: As a civil engineer with a passion for writing, how do you find the balance between your day job and crafting compelling stories?
David Haws: Writing is my creative outlet, so I make time for it in the mornings and evenings, working around the demands of my day job. It's about prioritizing and making the most of the time available. I take the time management and planning aspect from the day job to find the time to write, but the writing gives me a chance to unwind from the analytical thinking the job demands.
Q9: Your website tagline is "Fiction Without Limits. Every Book a New Frontier." What does this tagline mean to you, and how does it reflect your approach to storytelling?
David Haws: "Fiction Without Limits" encapsulates my belief that stories should transcend boundaries or that authors should be confined to a single genre. Every book is an opportunity to explore new frontiers, whether it's a supernatural thriller, a spy novel, or a time-travel adventure. I want readers to embark on diverse journeys with each of my books.
There you have it, folks—a glimpse into the mind of David Haws, the architect of the Shadow Sport trilogy and a storyteller with a passion for pushing the boundaries of fiction. Happy reading!
